Resonance With Indie Game: The Movie

I recently saw the documentary Indie Game: The Movie. This movies is not only a must see, but does a great job of illustrating just what exactly a game developer does. To date, the most accurate description of ‘game making’ was ‘Grandma’s Boy’ or those terrible For Profit school commercials. (Up the graphics on level 3). Iit was great to share the experience with my non gameplaying, very patient (and supportive) girlfriend. Although she is the primary sounding board of my game development highs and lows, Indie Game The Movie finally gave her a frame of reference for this passion of mine.

It sounds cliche, but the movie really resonated with me on a personal level. It features Team Meat, Phil Fish, and Jonathan Blow; prominent figures to anyone who follows the ‘indie game scene’. Prior to this, I felt that all three developers came off as somewhat pretentious, and self involved. By the end, however, I found that I had more than a little in common with each of the developers. IGTM does an amazing job of not only talking about each team’s projects at various development phases. Each of the main developers represents a different aspect of the process. Jonathan Blow is dealing with success post-release of Braid. Team Meat is fighting to finish Super Meat Boy as cash is running out. Phil Fish deals with a seemingly endless legal battle and re-designs involving Fez.

Each stage shows the vulnerability and self doubt that goes along with trying to produce a game. Although I’m nowhere near as complete a game as these guys, I found myself identifying with what they are going through. The universal need for an indie developer is a great support system. I walked away with a stronger resolve to FINISH a game. Although the movie does not shy away from the toll this can take, the elation that comes with people playing your finished game. That’s the feeling I’m chasing. That’s what keeps me going.

If you take nothing else from this post: GO SEE INDIE GAME THE MOVIE. Here’s a trailer if you haven’t seen it.
