The Rising Ships of The Chicago Indie Scene

This past weekend I attended Chicago Tech Week. The conference gathers seemingly every tech company Chicago has to offer. This, own its own is fantastic. As someone who follows the tech scene, its nice to see a vibrant community outside of silicon valley.  This year, the Chicago branch of the IGDA (International Game Developer’s Association) was there as well. They created what could only be described as a ‘Mega Booth’ that featured games from virtually every developer in the city.

As a gamer, its great to see so many fun new titles to play at once. As an aspiring developer, it was truly inspiring to see just how active the game development community is in Chicago. The industry here has always been important, but recent years have scene layoffs, and the departure of large studios. The result is smaller studios, and independent developers making games for social, mobile, and downloadable platforms. This new Chicago is made up of students, and hobbyists using the power of crowdsourcing to realize their vision. Nowhere else is the phrase “All ships rise with the tide” more apt than here in Chicago. Everyone in the IGDA booth truly seemed interested in the success of their fellow developers. Attending Chicago Techweek confirmed what I already knew, the gaming community is set to explode again. I want to be a part of it.
